TO SPEND THE AFTERNOON (MERIGGIARE PALLIDO ASSORTO...)
To the people of Vernazza and Monterosso

To spend the afternoon, absorbed and pale,
beside a burning garden wall;
to hear, among the stubble and the thorns,
the blackbirds cackling and the rustling snakes.

On the cracked earth or in the vetch
to spy on columns of red ants
now crossing, now dispersing,
atop their miniature heaps.

To ponder, peering through the leaves,
the heaving of the scaly sea
while the cicadas' wavering screech
goes up from balding peaks.

And walking out into the sunlight's glare
to feel with melancholy wonder
how all of life and its travail
is in this following a wall
topped with the shards of broken bottles.

After the violent flood on 25th of October (Cinque Terre, Liguria, Italia) the destroyed towns survive in the words of their poet. It needs money but also poetry to rebuild the garden walls.

MERIGGIARE PALLIDO ASSORTO
Alle donne e agli uomini di Vernazza e Monterosso

Meriggiare pallido e assorto
presso un rovente muro d’orto,
ascoltare tra i pruni e gli sterpi
schiocchi di merli, frusci di serpi.

Nelle crepe del suolo o su la veccia
spiar le file di rosse formiche
ch’ora si rompono ed ora s’intrecciano
a sommo di minuscole biche.

Osservare tra frondi il palpitare
lontano di scaglie di mare
mentre si levano tremuli scricchi
di cicale dai calvi picchi.

E andando nel sole che abbaglia
sentire con triste meraviglia
com’è tutta la vita e il suo travaglio
in questo seguitare una muraglia
che ha in cima cocci aguzzi di bottiglia.

Dopo la terribile alluvione del 25 ottobre le terre cancellate sopravvivono nei versi del loro poeta. Ci vogliono i soldi ma anche la poesia per ricostruire i muri degli orti.
